"One man, scorned and covered with scars, still strove with his last ounce of courage to reach the unreachable stars; and the world will be better for this"--Cervantes

Remarkable

"The Pilgrims made seven times more graves than huts. No Americans have been more impoverished than these who, nevertheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving."

-- H.U. Westermayer

That the most improverished group of people in history--after a year of death, of agony, of pain, sickness, and uncertainty--set aside an entire day to thank God for all that they had...that is Hope.

So here I go:

This girl in my Physics class (she also is in Humanities, which means she has read Ishmael) was talking about her future plans.  She wants to be an anesthesiologist.  That's all great and everything, if you're doing it for the right reasons, but her reason is so she can have a lot of money to go home to every night.  So she can live in a big house and have a big-screen TV.  What she really wants to do is be an actress, but can't stand the hard work she might have to go through to make it.
The guy that sits next to her, and the girl that sits in front of him have similar aspirations and are similarly going to destroy their lives.  I cannot even fathom why they believe that having money and a large house is all there is to happiness.  Yes, it helps.  I admit that openly and freely...it helps.  But it's not everything!  To me, it's hardly anything.  Do what you want to do and live your life with whom you want to live it.

Marry someone you love.  Work a job you love.  Live where you want to live.  Travel to places you want to see.  "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams!  Live the life you've imagined!"- Thoreau.  Do not shy in the face of hard work or adversity...rise up and meet it head on.  That's how you have a good life.

Crazytown:

In 1910 football teams were penalized 15 yards for an incomplete forward pass.
Ancient Romans at one time used human urine as an ingredient in their toothpaste.
This year, more than 2.5 million books will be shipped with the wrong covers!

The Starfish Story

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a figure in the distance.  As he got closer, he realized the figure was that of a boy picking up and gently throwing something into the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked, "What are you doing?"

The youth replied, "Throwing starfish into the ocean.  You see, the sun is coming up and the tide is going out.  If I don't throw them in, they'll die."

"Son," the man said, "don't you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds and thousands of starfish?  You cannot possibly make a difference."

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it into the ocean.  Then smiling at the man, he said, "but I made a difference for that one."

I wish we lived by nature.  Specifically, I would like to live in a suburban-esque town (all the amenities and such) but with a forest about a block from my house that I could take a walk in and get lost forever...or until I wanted to go home.  I've never been anywhere that seemed like I could get lost and no one could find me and, frankly, I want that right now.  Not because I want to die or become a recluse or because I'm mad at my friends and want to get away...just because I want to be in nature and experience some of this stuff Whitman and Thoreau were talking about.  (Yes, English actually did something to/for me.)  I think it would be very nice to go into the woods either alone or with one or two friends and just sit and think in silence.  Once we had our little breakthroughs, we could either talk about them or drive/walk back home in silence—I really wouldn't care.  I just want to experience the feeling of the possibility of getting lost in something so large and powerful and undiscovered and untouched as a forest.  I don't know why I thought of all that, but I know I was outside making a call in the perfect weather and thought wow, that fence, shed, pool, and house are really tacky...go away fence, shed, pool and house!

This brings me to my next point.  Okay, it really doesn't but I like the saying.  I have made a lot of bad decisions throughout the course of this school year—most of them early on— and then I spent a lot of time feeling regretful when I lost the stuff I had gained.  I now realize that I was stupid and I couldn't have anything better than I have now.  The people who don't like me, the people who hate me, the people who talk about me behind my back are inevitable.  What I have now is better, so thank you—all of you—for sticking with me, even though I was pretty much a stuck-up jerk to all of you.  If you have any ill-feelings, please bring them up to me so I can try to make things right.

I've been looking for a funny little story (fact or fiction) I could tell to make people laugh so if anyone has one, please post it for me and/or send it to me.

"It's not me who can't keep a secret, it's the people I tell who can't."  Abraham Lincoln
"Since love grows within you, so beauty grows...for love is the beauty of the soul."  (Saint Augustine)
